dictionary > Catalogues of Contemporary Art

When contemporary art was introduced in Eastern Europe during the 1990s, one of the most striking novelty was the publication of very well printed catalogues. No doubt there is an interesting  relation between the history of the illustrated merchandise catalogues, and today's glossy catalogues of contemporary art. Here are some pages from one of the early catalogues of contemporary art, released before World War Two by the IBM corporation. It is also an example of early global corporate patronage, as IBM began to collect art from all over the world. The 1937 catalogue bellow shows paintings from 79 countries with which this company began to conduct business, whereas the 1940 one represents one artist from each state of the United States of America.
